Millie's Classroom News (9/26)

Note from Millie's teacher, We have had a great time working with your young meteorologists. They have been busy identifying and describing different types of weather, learning about the seasons, and recording weather data. This week, each first grade class rotated through the other first grade classrooms for science lessons on wind. While visiting Mrs. Labouchere and Ms. Mitchell’s class, students completed a wind experiment where they predicted and tested what items the wind would move. Mrs. Moran and Ms. Reynolds’s class visit was spent exploring tools used by meteorologists for forecasting weather. In Mrs. Lee and Ms. Camp’s classroom, the students got to make a pinwheel. After all three rotations, all of first grade celebrated our learning by going outside to observe fall and enjoy our pinwheels. Click here for pictures.

Millie's Classroom News (9/12)

Literacy Our goal the past 6 weeks of school was to introduce classroom routines and structures in a way that removes all of the guesswork from the children and allows them to concentrate fully on learning. In reading, the classroom structure we use is called “Daily Five”. “The Daily Five” is a literacy structure that teaches independence and gives children the skills needed to create a lifetime love of reading and writing. It consists of five tasks that are introduced individually. When introduced to each task, the children discuss what it looks like, sounds like, and feels like to engage in the task independently. Then, the children work on building their stamina until they are successful at being independent while doing that task. The five tasks include: 1. Read to self 2. Read to someone 3. Listen to reading 4. Work on writing 5. Word work When all five tasks have been introduced and the children are fully engaged in reading and writing activities, we are able to work with small groups and confer with children one on one. This structure is effective and the children really look forward to center time. Ask your child about building their stamina and see what he/she has to say. Math In math we’ve been working on reviewing kindergarten concepts such as writing our numbers, and representing numbers with tally marks, We’ve also been skip counting by fives and twos , and have begun the process of using the calendar, the clock, the hundreds chart, and number lines as mathematical tools. We recently began the second unit. Unit 2 has four main areas of focus: To explore various uses of numbers To introduce the analog clock To practice finding the values of various combinations of pennies and nickels To introduce number models for change-to-more and change-to-less situations To see pictures, click here.

Home is where the heart is IMG_8542

Our house until I was in the 2nd grade. Doesn't look like the way we left it. But it holds some amazing memories and I will always remember it exactly like that. IMG_8547

Love these two. Especially when they will be models for my new lens :) Not every picture I take is awesome...but sometimes when the lighting is perfect...I can certainly rattle off 44 pictures that I just LOVE. EU8C2739 EU8C2746 Untitled-1 Untitled-2 Untitled-3 Untitled-4 Untitled-5 Untitled-6

Curriculum Night

We spent this evening with Millie's teachers at her Curriculum Night. It was fun to see her art work around the room.
